Timothy Sorrentino
I started dancing as an undergraduate student at the University of Rhode Island in the fall of 1997. During that time, the club
was much smaller than it is currently. There was only one hour of American style social dancing per week, but it was enough to get me started,
never having done any type of dance before. A formation team was started in the spring semester, which I joined.
I quickly found that I enjoyed the dancing enough to look into learning more during the summer and come back to the club the following year. A couple of years later, I started taking private
lessons at the Dancin' Feelin' with Kathy St. Jean, Randy Deats, and David Endicott to start learning International style dancing and start competing. I competed at many collegiate compeitions and USA Dance competitions as I moved through the competitive
ranks in all the ballroom dance styles. As the club expanded, the class offerings at URI grew and as I became a better dancer I started to help teach some of the
classes and have been with it ever since.
Currently, I still teach a lot of the classes for the URI Ballroom Dancing Club as it is something I love to do. I continue to compete as an amateur competitor in both Standard and Latin. While I do miss the American Rhythm and Smooth styles, I've focused more on the International style since my time is limited by my full-time job as a software engineer and being a parent. My primary current coaches are Liene Apale, Basil Issaev, Charlotte Jorgensen, Armin Kappacher, and Olga Kinnard. I'm also a registered scrutineer with NDCA.
